About

Hi! I'm Aris, the person behind The Hockey Lab. This is the story of how this app came to be.

A very late start

I'm originally from Malaysia, and I didn't pick up hockey until after college, in the San Francisco Bay Area of all places. Incredibly late by any measure. But I loved the sport from day one, in that immediate, irrational way that makes you wonder where it's been your whole life.

Playing for Malaysia

When I moved back to Malaysia, I found a small but passionate hockey community. I played for the Malaysian National Ice Hockey Team from 2007 to 2012. It was a wild experience representing your country in a sport most people don't expect Malaysia to have a team in.

The obsession with improving

As an adult learner, I was always trying to figure out how to get better. I didn't have years of muscle memory to fall back on, so I had to be deliberate about it. One area that nagged at me was shot speed. I wanted to know how hard I was shooting, and whether my practicing was actually paying off. So I considered buying a radar gun.

The radar gun problem

I started reading reviews of radar guns, and honestly, they were uninspiring. A lot of complaints about accuracy: readings varying wildly between devices, with inconsistent results.

Then it hit me: modern phone cameras can record fantastic video in slow motion, at 120 frames per second or higher. If you have a slow-motion video of a puck in flight, could you accurately calculate its speed from that? I started testing. I'm a software engineer after all, and a maker at heart. After a lot of experimentation, the answer turned out to be yes.

One thing led to another

Once I got speed detection working well, I realized a whole other set of possibilities was opening up. You're not just measuring, you're also recording it with a phone. So you can see your form (in slow motion of course), tag shots, track your progress over time, share results with teammates, and use it as a team. The app grew from there.

Now my own kids are starting to play hockey, and they love the instant feedback the app gives them as they practice shooting. Now that's gratifying :)

Tell me what you think

I love reading every piece of feedback. If something isn't working, if you have an idea, or if you just want to say hi, you should use the AI-powered support chat in the app or on this website. I read all of those messages!
