1. About This Policy
The Hockey Lab (“we”, “our”, or “us”) operates the The Hockey Lab mobile application and related services. This policy explains what personal information we collect, how we use it, and the choices you have. By using the app you agree to the practices described here.

2. Information We Collect
- Account information — your email address, chosen username, bio, social handles, website, and profile photo.
- Location (coarse) — country and state/province you optionally provide. When you reach the relevant settings screen, the app sends a request to a free IP geolocation service (freeipapi.com) to pre-fill these fields for convenience; this means your IP address is shared with freeipapi.com as part of that request. Only the country and state/province values you confirm and save are stored on our servers. We do not collect GPS coordinates.
- Training data — puck speed measurements, session recordings, and associated metadata you create in the app.
- User content — posts, photos, comments, and other content you share with the community.
- Device identifiers — a UUID generated by the app on first launch and stored only on your device (not your phone’s hardware or advertising ID), along with your phone model (e.g. “iPhone 15”) and platform (iOS/Android). These are used to enforce device limits on paid plans and detect abuse.
- Usage data — app events, session data, and session recordings (screen interaction replays) collected by PostHog for product analytics. Session recordings mask all text inputs. Network requests made by the app and console logs may also be captured. This data may be linked to your account.
- Purchase history — subscription tier and transaction records managed by RevenueCat.
3. How We Use Your Information
- To provide and operate the app, including authenticating your account, storing your speeds, and powering social features.
- To process subscription payments and enforce plan limits.
- To send in-app notifications and, if you opt in, push notifications about activity in the app.
- To analyse how the app is used so we can improve it (via PostHog).
- To display your speeds and profile to other users as permitted by your privacy settings.
- To respond to support requests and enforce our Terms of Service.
4. Third-Party Services
We share data with the following third parties as necessary to operate the service:
- Privy — handles email OTP authentication. Your email is shared with Privy to send login codes.
- Firebase / Firestore (Google) — real-time database used to sync your speeds, posts, and notifications.
- Amazon Web Services (S3) — stores two types of files: (1) video recordings of your shots, and (2) metadata files associated with each shot (timing, speed calculation data, and related measurements). Files are stored in the US.
- RevenueCat — manages in-app subscriptions and purchase validation on your behalf.
- PostHog — product analytics. Collects event data, session recordings (screen interaction replays), network telemetry, and logs about how you use the app. Text inputs are masked in session recordings. This data may be pseudonymously linked to your account.
We do not sell your personal information to advertisers or data brokers.
5. Data Retention
We retain your data for as long as your account is active. When you delete your account (via Profile → Delete Account in the app), we delete or anonymise your personal information, posts, speeds, and recordings within 30 days, except where we are required by law to retain it longer.
6. Your Rights
- Access and portability — you can request a copy of your personal data by emailing legal@thehockeylab.app.
- Correction — you can update most profile information directly in the app.
- Deletion — you can delete your account at any time from the Profile tab in the app. We will process the deletion within 30 days.
- Opt-out of analytics — you can opt out of PostHog analytics tracking at any time by contacting us at legal@thehockeylab.app.
If you are located in the European Economic Area or California, you may have additional rights under GDPR or CCPA. Please contact us to exercise them.
7. Children
The app is intended for users aged 13 and over. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. If you believe a child under 13 has created an account, please contact us and we will delete it promptly.
8. Security
We use industry-standard measures including HTTPS encryption, access controls, and secure third-party infrastructure to protect your data. We authenticate via email one-time passcode (OTP) — there is no password to manage. To protect your account, keep your email account secure and be cautious of phishing attempts asking for your login codes.
9. Changes to This Policy
We may update this policy from time to time. Material changes will be communicated via in-app notification or email. The “Last updated” date at the top of this page reflects the most recent revision.
